Somatic therapy

Reconnecting with Your Body’s Innate Wisdom

somatic-therapy-healing.jpg

Somatic therapy offers a gentle yet powerful path to healing when you feel stuck, disconnected from yourself, or caught in a constant state of survival. Perhaps you’ve found that while understanding your story is vital, true, and lasting change feels just out of reach. Traditional talk-based therapies are incredibly valuable, but for many, especially those who have experienced trauma, they can feel incomplete. This is because the wounds of trauma, loss, neglect, and oppression, are not just stored as memories in the mind; they are held as non-verbal sensations and patterns deep within the body’s nervous system.

Somatic therapy facilitates both cultivating awareness of your body sensations and the capacity to shift how you experience yourself. Traumatic experiences may have affected your body so deeply that you feel drained and heavy -  like stagnant water no longer flowing. Together, we work to help that water begin to flow again, restoring your body`s capacity to recover vitality, flow and ease.

I believe that inside each of us are sparks of life force that, when properly tended to, catalyze the body`s  innate capacity to heal. Our work is a co-creation: a journey toward reconnecting with the wisdom your body already holds. This page will guide you through the principles of this transformative work, who it can help, and what our journey together might look like.

Understanding Somatic Therapy: What Does It Mean to Heal Through the Body?

To truly grasp the potential of this work, it helps to understand its foundational principles. Somatic therapy is grounded in the simple but profound truth of the mind-body connection: our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations are inextricably linked.

Unprocessed life experiences don't just disappear; they can become lodged in our physiology, shaping how we feel, how we relate to others, and how we move through the world. This section explores the core concepts that guide our work together.

The Body Remembers

At the heart of somatic work is the principle that the body holds onto our life experiences. Deeply impactful events, like trauma, profound loss, or the persistent stress of systemic oppression, can disrupt the delicate balance of our nervous system. This can create lasting patterns of anxiety, hypervigilance, emotional shutdown, or a feeling of being frozen that seem to operate beyond our conscious control. Your body developed these responses as a brilliant way to survive, and by listening to its story, we can begin to heal.

Beyond Symptoms, Toward Wholeness

Many therapeutic approaches focus on managing symptoms like anxiety or depression. While providing relief is important, my goal is to gently explore and transform the root causes of these symptoms, which are so often held within the body. In our work, symptoms are not seen as pathologies to be eliminated, but as symbolic expressions and adaptive responses. They are messages from your inner world, calling for compassionate understanding. By tending to the roots, we can cultivate a deeper, more sustainable sense of wholeness.

That is why our work together often involves body-centered therapies to gently regulate your nervous system and process trauma that is stored somatically.

Somatic therapy supports your body's capacity to move between states - from mobilizing and socializing to rest and equilibrium - the state our bodies naturally seek. We often say colloquially that we need to “shift gears,” when we need more or less energy for a task, and our bodies continuously handle this autonomously. However, overwhelming experiences, especially if repetitive, can cause our nervous system to stay in a prolonged  state of hypervigilance or shut down. What was meant to be temporary  becomes more permanent, affecting the body`s capacity to shift back and forth. We lose our ability  to regulate our emotions and feel vital,  especially when these experiences occurred in isolation and without the support of a caring other.

The Role of the Nervous System

Our nervous system is constantly scanning the world for cues of safety and danger, shifting between different states to help us navigate life. Drawing from Polyvagal theory, we can learn to recognize these states, from the activation of fight-or-flight to the shutdown of freeze. In our sessions, we will work together to notice the subtle sensations in your body, gently guiding your nervous system out of survival states and into a place of safety, connection, and ease. You don't need to be an expert on your nervous system. Our work is simply to bring a gentle curiosity to the sensations you're already experiencing. This process helps you build a greater capacity to regulate your own emotions and feel more grounded in your day-to-day life.

Eugene Gendlin, the founder of Focusing, noticed that when we tend with gentleness and curiosity to the “felt-sense” - those subtle sensations arising in the body - significant shifts can happen. Together, we might tend to a tingling, or tension, or  tightness in your chest, perhaps noticing if it moves or stays steady, or simply caring for it by placing your hand on your heart. As we tend to it with gentleness, we might witness it shifting. In this way, we are supporting your body and nervous system shift,  moving from restriction to relaxation, and from heaviness to flow and calm.

This body-centered approach can offer profound support for individuals navigating a wide range of life challenges.

Who Can Find Healing with Somatic Therapy?

If you are reading this, chances are you are seeking something more for yourself, more ease, more vitality, more freedom. You may feel that you’ve tried everything, yet the echoes of past experiences continue to shape your present. This section is meant to help you see yourself in this work and understand how a body-centered approach can offer relief for some of the challenges you may be facing.

Healing from Childhood, Developmental, and Relational Trauma

For those healing from complex trauma, revisiting painful memories verbally can sometimes feel overwhelming or even re-traumatizing. Somatic therapy provides a safe and contained way to process traumatic experiences that are stored in the body. By gently engaging the body,  we can gently release stored energy without needing to rely solely on a verbal narrative, allowing your nervous system to complete responses that may have been frozen in time.

Finding Calm Amidst Anxiety and Overwhelm

Anxiety, social anxiety, and feelings of overwhelm often manifest as very real physical sensations: a tight chest, a racing heart, a knot in your stomach. Somatic work helps you build a greater capacity to be with these sensations without being consumed by them. By tuning into your body with gentle curiosity, you can learn to regulate your nervous system, reduce the intensity of anxious feelings, and cultivate an inner sense of calm and centerdeness.

Breaking Free from Patterns of People-Pleasing and Relational Trauma

Past relational wounds, such as narcissistic abuse, rejection, or abandonment, can leave us with deep-seated patterns of people-pleasing or compulsive caretaking. These are often survival strategies learned long ago to maintain connection and safety. Somatic therapy helps you connect with your body’s signals, rebuild a foundation of internal safety, and cultivate a felt sense of self-trust. This embodied self-awareness is the key to setting compassionate boundaries and fostering healthier, more authentic relationships.

A Space for Adults, LGBTQ+ Individuals, Women and Immigrants

As a culturally sensitive therapist steeped in social justice principles, I am committed to creating a space where the impacts of systemic harm can be acknowledged and healed. Living with the daily weight of discrimination, oppression, and invalidation takes a significant physical and emotional toll. Somatic therapy can be a powerful tool for processing this embodied experience, helping you soothe some of the tension, grief, and anger held in your body and reclaim your vitality and sense of self.

This holistic and compassionate approach is at the heart of how I practice therapy.

A Foundation of Safety and Compassion

Our therapeutic relationship is the foundation of your healing journey. I imagine the therapy space as a welcoming cove where we explore what’s on the shore of your consciousness that calls for healing. We slow down, as when walking on the rocks, careful to respect the very tender and usually hidden parts that emerge at low tides. I am here to offer a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental, and supportive presence as we witness your story together. We will  move at a pace that feels right for you, ensuring that our work together honors your pace.

Weaving Wisdom: Integrating Somatic Work with Other Modalities

To support your healing in a holistic way, I draw from several powerful modalities that complement each other. and deepen somatic work. Our sessions may include:

  • Focusing: A gentle yet profound practice of turning your attention inward to notice bodily sensations, often called the 'felt sense” - those subtle sensations arising in the body. Eugene Gendling, the founder of Focusing, noticed that tending with gentleness and curiosity to the “felt-sense,” significant shifts happened. Together, we might tend to a tingling, or tightness in your chest, perhaps noticing if it moves or stays steady, or simply caring for it by placing your hand on your heart. As we tend to it, we might witness it shifting. In this way, we are supporting your nervous system, interrupting a pattern, and  returning to a state closer to equilibrium, perhaps moving from restriction to relaxation, and from heaviness to flow and calm attentive presence.

  • Brainspotting: A powerful, focused method that helps your brain and body gently process and release sources of pain and trauma that are held deeper than words can reach.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) / Parts Work: A compassionate and transformative approach that invites us to get to know the different parts of ourselves (like the inner critic or the anxious part). We discover how these parts live in your body, helping to release the physical burdens and tensions they carry. By building relationships with these parts, we can heal internal conflicts and foster a sense of inner harmony and leadership.

  • Depth, Jungian & Transpersonal Psychology: An approach that honors the wisdom of the deep psyche. We may explore the rich, symbolic language of dreams and imagination to connect with the deeper, soulful dimensions of your experience and uncover your authentic nature.

  • Ecotherapy: A modality that recognizes the profound healing power of our relationship with the natural world. When appropriate and desired, our sessions can take place outdoors, allowing the mirror of nature to support your journey of remembering your own wholeness.

So, what might this journey of healing actually feel like for you?

Your Somatic Therapy Journey: What to Expect

Entering into therapy is a courageous act. It is no small thing to consider trusting someone with your vulnerability and your hopes for a different future. To help demystify the process, this section provides an overview of our path together, from our very first conversation to the transformative outcomes we can work toward.

Our First Connection

We begin with a free 15-20 minute session. This initial call is a relaxed, no-pressure opportunity for us to connect. I will invite you to share a little about what is bringing you to therapy now, and you will have the chance to ask me any questions you may have about my approach. Most importantly, this is a time for you to get a feel for my presence and for us to explore whether we feel like a good fit to work together.

In Our Sessions

I imagine our sessions as a collaborative process of slowing down and bringing gentle curiosity to your inner world. When appropriate, I might invite you to see if it`s ok for you  to notice what is present in your body. Once we have permission from yourself, or a part of you,  we track the wisdom that emerges from your physical sensations, images, emotions, and thoughts. Or we might explore “your anchors” - experiences, practices, or places - that feel nurturing to you, or learn practices that support your body which you can use outside of our time together. While there are many ways in which I integrate this approach, I hold our work as deeply client-centered. That  means we will always explore what feels most right and supportive for you at any given moment. This is your space to be seen, heard, and held with compassion.
